Meet the band
Quay Change is available in different line-ups but meet the band below to read about our youthful and experienced musicians!
Fred Binley - Piano/Vocals
Fred Binley has been playing piano for over 20 years.
He started his move into jazz by gigging with big bands in Stratford-upon-Avon. His career has included acting with
the RSC, accompanying the London Guildhall Gospel Choir, teaching music in New York and playing piano all over the UK.
In 2004, having completed a degree in music at Lancaster University and after a spell conducting the University Big Band, Fred became a founder member of Quay Change.
Laurence Canty - Bass Guitar
Laurence Canty started his professional career freelancing in London. His playing involved every type of venue from The Albert Hall to cruise ships on the Med and also recording for BBC TV and Radio 2. He has taught bass privately and at Goldsmiths College, University of London. His pupils include the bass players from Sade, Shakatak and Radiohead - hence his credit on the latter's album OK Computer. He has written books on bass which have sold worldwide and articles for the magazines Making Music, Bassist (UK) and Bass Player (US).
His playing eventually led to him having his own quartet for a five-year residency at the Tower Hotel. When he moved to Lancaster that band was the inspiration for Quay Change. He'd already heard Amy Worth - Quay Change's first vocalist. The next step was to find a top quality pianist. Eventually in 2004, he met Fred when they played in a band together. It was instantly obvious that the vacancy for a pianist had been filled.
Helen Longworth - Vocals
Helen Longworth trained as an actor and singer at RADA. She has been a member of the BBC Radio Drama Company, recording many plays for Radio 4 and has toured nationally with theatre productions. She has made TV appearances in Coronation Street, Doctors, Hollyoaks, Heartbeat & Emmerdale.
Helen has also performed plays on-board the QM2 and also compiled, directed and appeared in ‘Deck The Hall’, a site specific musical Christmas Show performed at Lancaster Castle.
Charlotte Dalton - Vocals
Charlotte Dalton is a North West based singer and has been performing for over ten years. Not only is she an incredibly sultry, swinging singer, she is also a highly trained actress and dancer, graduating from the Guildford School of Acting. Her vocal styles range from light Classical to Musical Theatre, right through to Soul, Jazz and Pop.
Dave Lee - Alto Sax, Soprano Sax, Clarinet
Dave Lee's musical experience was gained in the ballrooms, hotels and piers of Blackpool. A persistent interest in jazz led him to playing in jazz clubs all over the North West and beyond. Prestigious events included television and BBC radio broadcasts, illuminations switch-ons and appearances with some of the top jazz musicians from the UK and
Ian Tildesley - Drums/Percussion
Ian started clattering things early in life in his home town of London. After much weeping and gnashing of teeth he finally persuaded his parents to relent and get him a drum kit. From that day forward there's been no looking back. Ian has played in all manner of bands from Rock to Country and all stops in between. Arriving in the north-west some years ago he eventually hooked up with members of Quay Change and began a love affair with Jazz. Ian plays both drum kit and latin percussion (and loves both!) when playing with
Tim Franks - Drums
Tim got his first drum kit as a teenager and has been playing drums for more years than he (or anyone else) cares to remember. He has played regularly with QC since 2006. His playing has been influenced by many styles, including jazz, blues, soul and latin. Tim played on the QE2 and has backed many British and American jazz and blues artists.
